Or how about we just let Carillon keep the Gem City Savings clock and rebuild the original clock tower - there is really no comparison! Sorry, I still think that thing is ugly! Looks like something that belongs in an outlet mall...

The clock has sort of lost its meaning.

I wonder what it originally looked like. I know I've seen a pic but I'm not sure if it was in a book or online.
You're right, there is no comparison. Maybe it should just stay at the Carillon...

Seems like John Gower made a comment at the GDDP public meeting about constructing a replica of the original tower for the 3C station. .

It really wasn't that attractive of a building. Just a land mark for those now 70+ years old. Might be more interesting if they replicated the old King Cole Dining Room in the train station. Just kidding.

However humble it might be, it needs to be something "Original" to Dayton.

Now that I think about it, Murf is right - John did talk about recreating the original clock tower, not moving the Gem City Savings clock. However, there are talks about developing about a fourth of Dave Hall Plaza and redesigning the rest as a usable public square, with the Gem City Savings clock potentially being placed at one of the Main Street corners. I got my clock conversations mixed up. Whew!

^ I agree with you, Bill. The clock isn't that great looking; but that's not the historic significance of the tower. I don't know if it's still working, but the Gem City Savings tower at Third and Main had a great . . . and loud . . . chime on the hour and half hour. It was just a part of the city sounds. You could depend upon it reminding you what time it was when you were downtown. The tower, also, is symbolic of the center of the Dayton community--Third and Main. It's been tarnished over the last few decades, but Third and Main is the gathering place of the community to hear political speeches, rally support for a flood control system that saved this city, welcome the Wright brothers, welcome back troops from this nation's wars, etc. The clock is symbolic, even if it's not pretty.

Interesting, it was City Bank before Gem City Savings, then finally Gem Savings. Then poof, Citizens Federal.
